Fall Kickoff Classic History

Fall Kickoff Classic '14

August 16th & 17th, 2014

Saturday and Sunday turned out to be beautiful days for the inaugural Fall Kickoff Classic hosted by Valley AFC.  The wonderful Blue Ridge Mountains provided a great backdrop for the tournament.  The mornings were clear and cooler.  The afternoons saw the temperature approach the 90’s.  The early evening cooled off nicely.  No rain dampened the event.  With over 20 teams and a dozen soccer clubs in participation, the first event was certainly a successful one.

Soccer filled the air for two straight days.  The various clubs and their parents brought the event to life.  Multi-colored uniforms and tents dotted the fields.  The players and coaches got a sneak preview of their teams prior to the travel season beginning.  The Merriman field location allowed easy access to food, shopping and accommodations. For those who didn’t want to leave the fields, there were frozen snow cones, Gatorades and water available.    The tournament was professionally run and Valley’s planning was evident.  Valley had a small army of volunteers who did a great job keeping everything on track.  For the vast majority of the tournament, there was a staffed ambulance sitting at the ready to deal with injuries.  Information was available from the staff.  Scores were quickly transferred to either Valley’s onsite score board or via the web.  For a first time event, the tourney went off without too many hitches.

Look for this tournament to become a mainstay for Valley AFC with each year bringing more teams and more soccer to the Roanoke Valley.  That’s what we’re all about.  Valley AFC.  “Soccer for all”
