Fall Kickoff Classic '15

The second Annual Valley AFC Kickoff Classic was a major success!  The tournament growing in size from the inaugural event, held last year.  Designed as a more relaxed, preseason tournament, it gave teams a fun and competitive weekend of play - allowing coaches and players from all over the state to begin their preparations for the Fall 2015 season.
The opening day of the Kickoff Classic started at, a bright and early, 8am.  A gorgeous day for soccer that saw local food trucks & vendors lined up along the tournament registration area.  Cheers roared from field to field as parents & families were encouraging their teams! Players celebrated goals & were battling for every touch of the ball.  Games ended under the lights while the Blue Ridge Mountains gave a scenic backdrop - an impressive sight!
The second day of the event kicked off with many semi final and pivotal third group stage matches.  The complex filled quickly with players, coaches, spectators and cheers as the games kicked off.  Though the start of the day was, again, beautiful it turned ominously dark later in the afternoon! Nasty thunderstorms started to roll through near the end of the last few championship matches.
Though the tournament ended on a wet & rainy note the players remained in high spirits - making the most of the rain after an, otherwise, extremely warm weekend.

Valley AFC would like to thank everyone that attended the event for providing a competitive, fun, family filled weekend.  We are excited to see everyone back next year!

Saturday and Sunday turned out to be beautiful days for the inaugural Fall Kickoff Classic hosted by Valley AFC.  The wonderful Blue Ridge Mountains provided a great backdrop for the tournament.  The mornings were clear and cooler.  The afternoons saw the temperature approach the 90’s.  The early evening cooled off nicely.  No rain dampened the event.  With over 20 teams and a dozen soccer clubs in participation, the first event was certainly a successful one.

Soccer filled the air for two straight days.  The various clubs and their parents brought the event to life.  Multi-colored uniforms and tents dotted the fields.  The players and coaches got a sneak preview of their teams prior to the travel season beginning.  The Merriman field location allowed easy access to food, shopping and accommodations. For those who didn’t want to leave the fields, there were frozen snow cones, Gatorades and water available.    The tournament was professionally run and Valley’s planning was evident.  Valley had a small army of volunteers who did a great job keeping everything on track.  For the vast majority of the tournament, there was a staffed ambulance sitting at the ready to deal with injuries.  Information was available from the staff.  Scores were quickly transferred to either Valley’s onsite score board or via the web.  For a first time event, the tourney went off without too many hitches.

Look for this tournament to become a mainstay for Valley AFC with each year bringing more teams and more soccer to the Roanoke Valley.  That’s what we’re all about.  Valley AFC.  “Soccer for all”
