Va Beach Columbus Day Tournament: 2 Championships & 5 Finalists

VAFC Xpress Green teams traveled this past weekend for our annual trip to Virginia Beach to participate in Beach FC's Columbus Day Soccer Tournament. Escaping the poor weather here in Roanoke, players and parents alike had a wonderful time.

Xpress families were treated to the beautiful beach, good food, great company and, most importantly, competitive soccer!

Overall, the Xpress teams had 2 championship winners and 5 finalists. All 17 teams in attendance, though, were involved in close battles against teams from all around Virginia and beyond.

Congratulations to those receiving medals, but a bigger congratulations and thank you to every player and parent who attended the event. It is our families and friends who ensure that when the Xpress teams travel en masse that an enjoyable time is had by all!

Xpress 03 Girls Green

Congratulations to the Xpress 03G Green for winning the Championship this past weekend in Virginia Beach.  The team has been playing great soccer in the Skyline Premier League and was looking for their second championship since winning the Region 2000 Labor Day Tournament in Lynchburg, VA.  The girls powered through Saturday winning both games on and then had a blast off the field enjoying the amenities of VA Beach with even a few girls braving the ocean water then back to the pool for more fun.
Sunday was a more challenging day with the first game being tied 2-2 an advancement into the championship match.  The team came out flat and before they new it they were loosing 4 - 0 in the first half with 5 minutes left before the girls placed one in the opposing team's net.  The second half was all Xpress scoring an additional 3 goals to force overtime.  After two periods of overtime the score remained tied so a shoot-out took place where the Xpress won with outstanding goal keeping and pin-point shots.  But the greatest compliment was from the other team's coach and other team's players parents on congratulating the girls for their play, tenacity and outstanding sportsmanhip.    A remarkable comeback for a remarkable team!

They will be playing in the top flight at the Richmond Striker's 2014 Fall Capital Classic in November.
