VAFC Xpress Tournament Success

VAFC Xpress Tournament Success

The end of the Fall 2016 season is upon us. After an unlucky October, (where we saw a hurricane hit the east coast of the United States - causing a couple of weeks of uncertainty around league games and then tournament cancellations) November sees the Xpress hitting full steam ahead, once again!

This past weekend we saw the first of 2 weekends of tournament action for the Xpress teams - with 6 teams finishing as finalists and 2 as winners across 3 different events.

Piedmont Shootout

We start our round up in Martinsville; where we had Xpress teams competing in the 8th Annual Piedmont Shootout.

Finishing up as finalists, pictured above are the U15B Black team with their coach Dave Atkins. Well...not all of them! Despite their success over the weekend these 4 players did have the help of their team mates. Although most of the team were not at the ceremony, we do have their hard earned medals for distribution.

Also finishing in second place was the U17B Black team. Matt Smith's boys capped off a strong finish to their league campaign with a well-deserved finalist spot in this tournament. This team has shown great improvement from the beginning of the season and should be congratulated on their hard work.

We finish up in Martinsville with the U17G Black. Our 3rd finalist at the event! Winning both of their games on Saturday set Maryann Castaneda's team up with a spot in the final where they fell short in a hard fought battle with the hosts, PYSL.

Adidas Clash

2 VAFC Xpress teams traveled down to North Carolina for the 2016 Adidas Clash and both returned home with Medals!

The U16G Green team (pictured above with Coach Cory Carroll and Assistant Coach Randy Plunkett) found themselves in a tied final on Sunday and headed to PK’s! Though never an ideal way to lose a tournament final - the extra drama always makes for an interesting time!

The U18G Green team led by Coach Tom Brown and Assistant Coach Matt Cox continued their incredible season by winning their bracket in the Adidas Clash. They will play again this coming weekend in Williamsburg. Can they repeat their success?

Capital Fall Classic

This past weekend also saw the boys weekend of the Capital Fall Classic in Richmond.

After a season playing under the new, more restrictive, Skyline U11 rules Randall Kaminski and the U11B Green team were let loose this weekend to test themselves. The youngsters grabbed the opportunity by both hands, putting on display the skills gained over the last few months. A couple of excellent wins put them in the final against FC Richmond, where they fell just short.

John Hillman’s U12B Green team made an impressive unbeaten run to the final, losing in an exciting 3-5, goal fest, effort. Scoring, an incredible, 23 goals in 4 games shows that this team is one to watch whenever you get the chance!

Finally, we see the U19B Green team with Coach Rod Baker and Assistant Coach Jay Roberts. They remained unbeaten the entire weekend, bringing home the trophy. Much of this team will graduate this coming Spring and it’ll be tough for Coach Rod to say goodbye to many of players he introduced to the Xpress when he coached them as U11’s just a few short years ago.

Congratulations to all teams who competed this past weekend. We saw some strong performances by every team.

This coming weekend will see some of our teams in action at the Capital Fall Classic Girls Weekend in Richmond and the CCL Shootout in Williamsburg. Good luck to all travelling!
